Dr. Ayana Elizabeth Johnson is a marine biologist, Dr. Ayana Elizabeth Johnson is a marine biologist, policy expert, and writer. She is founder and CEO of Ocean Collectiv, a consulting firm for conservation solutions grounded in social justice, and founder of Urban Ocean Lab, a think tank for coastal city development that prioritizes sustainability. Dr. Johnson uses podcasts, essays, and public speaking events to promote intersectional climate activism.

Why Should We Use the X?
In celebration of Womxn’s History Month, we will be using the “X” in womxn as an inclusive and fluid gender-neutral alternative to an otherwise gendered term. The “X” thinks beyond the male/female binary to include trans women, nonbinary women,or others who identify as women. Womxn is pronounced the same as women or woman.

Gina Clayton-Johnson is founder and executive dire Gina Clayton-Johnson is founder and executive director of the Essie Justice Group, a nonprofit organization of women with incarcerated loved ones advocating for racial and gender justice. One of the main goals of the Essie Group is to empower Black and Latinx women, formerly and currently incarcerated women, transgender women, and gender non-conforming people to engage in mutual aid and advocacy.
