Frequently Asked Questions about Financial Assistance

1. Why do you need my FAFSA?
We need your complete FAFSA information to determine if you qualify for Reduced Rent or Income Qualified Rent. We use your income or your parent’s income information (if you are a dependent on their taxes) to determine if you meet Yolo County’s Low Income or Very Low Income category(s). Please submit your complete Student Aid Report off of your FAFSA Online account (not just the first page)!

2. What if I don’t have a FAFSA?
Those students who do not have a FAFSA or whose income is not listed on their FAFSA Student Aid Report may submit an alternative form of income verification, such as a tax return. (NOTE: if your parents claim you as a dependent we need income verification from them.) If students do not have either of those, unfortunately we cannot offer income-based financial assistance, but it is still possible to apply for a scholarship.

3. How do you determine scholarship awards?
Students who apply for scholarships are awarded on a first-come-first-served basis. The most common is our General Scholarship although students may apply for the Stoneking scholarship if they identify as LGBTQ+, or the Student Leader Scholarship if they would like to apply to be a Student Leader. Scholarships are a viable alternative if you do not qualify for Reduced Rent or Income Qualified Rent!

4. How do I apply for Financial Assistance?
Please attach a PDF copy of your complete Student Aid Report (SAR), or another form of income verification to your MLC Application and indicate on the application which type of Financial Assistance you wish to apply for.

Financial Assistance for the Multifaith Living Community

At CA House, we commit to do everything we can to make living at the MLC financially feasible for residents. With this in mind, we offer several options for residents seeking financial assistance. All assistance is awarded on a first come – first served basis and scholarship funding is limited. Residents may apply for more than one form of financial assistance, but may only receive one of the following during any given lease year.

Type of Assistance
Number Available
Monthly Rent for a Single Room
Monthly Rent for a Double Room
Income Qualified Rent 3 (max) $525 not applicable
Reduced Rent 7 (max) $735 not applicable
General Scholarship multiple $755 $470
Stoneking Scholarship 2 (max) $755 $440
Student Leader Scholarship 10 (max) $710 $395

Income Qualified Rent

Each year, CA House may lease up to three Income Qualified units for students who meet Yolo County Very Low Income requirements. Once the Income Qualified units are filled, applicants are placed on a waitlist for the next available vacancy. The income qualified rent for 2022-2023 is $525/month. In order to be considered, students must turn in their current FAFSA Student Aid Report (SAR) with their housing application.

Reduced Rent

Each year, CA House may lease up to seven units at a reduced rate for students who meet Yolo County Low Income requirements. Once the Reduced Rent units are filled, applicants are placed on a waitlist for the next available vacancy. Those who qualify will receive a fixed amount off of their rent each month for a single occupancy bedroom. For the 2022-2023 lease year, the rental reduction amount is $105. Reduced Rent is not available for double occupancy rooms. In order to be considered, students must turn in their current FAFSA Student Aid Report (SAR) with their housing application.

MLC General Scholarship

Our MLC General Scholarship is our most common form of financial assistance. MLC General Scholarships are awarded on a rolling basis to those who may not be eligible to receive Income Qualified or Reduced Rent, but still request financial assistance. The scholarship is equal to 10% of the monthly rental amount. All applicants for this scholarship must turn in their current FAFSA Student Aid Report (SAR) with their housing application in order to be considered.

Stoneking Scholarship

Kristin Stoneking was a former CA House Campus Minister (2003-2013) and founder of the Multifaith Living Community. The Stoneking Scholarship is available to any MLC Residents who identify as LGBTQ+. All applicants for this scholarship must turn in their current FAFSA Student Aid Report (SAR) with their housing application, and meet for a follow up interview in order to be considered.

Student Leader Scholarship

Students who demonstrate exceptional leadership skills and a passion for the MLC can apply for the Student Leadership Scholarship. For the 2022-2023 lease year, the Student Leader Scholarship is $130 per month. In order to receive this scholarship, you must be selected to serve a position in Student Leadership.
